PSLF eligibility

Does my employer qualify for PSLF?

Type your hospital or employer name and get an instant read on whether it likely qualifies for Public Service Loan Forgiveness — based on known nonprofit, government, and for-profit indicators.

Disclaimer: This is a rough heuristic only — not legal or financial advice. Many hospitals are 501(c)(3) nonprofits even if the name doesn't indicate it. The only authoritative source is MOHELA's review of your submitted ECF. See our methodology.

How PSLF employer eligibility works

PSLF forgives remaining federal student loan balances after 10 years (120 payments) of qualifying employment. Eligible employers include federal, state, and local government agencies and 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. For-profit companies — including for-profit hospital chains — do not qualify, even if they employ physicians performing public-benefit work.

The checker above uses name-based heuristics. Nonprofit status doesn't always show in a name — your employer's 501(c)(3) determination letter or the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search are the authoritative sources.

You can verify any employer and certify your qualifying employment by submitting an Employment Certification Form (ECF) to MOHELA, the PSLF loan servicer. Filing ECFs annually (rather than waiting until Year 10) is strongly recommended so errors are caught early.
