Common questions

Medical school loan calculator — FAQ

How accurate is this medical school loan calculator?

The calculator uses 2026 federal loan interest rates from studentaid.gov, IDR payment formulas from the IBR and RAP regulations, and specialty salary data from Marit Health's 2026 physician compensation report. It models your actual repayment trajectory month by month — not rough estimates. The methodology is published at /methodology.

Which loan repayment plans does it model?

MedDebt models IBR (Income-Based Repayment), RAP (Repayment Assistance Plan — new for loans disbursed July 1, 2026+), Standard 10-year repayment, aggressive payoff, and refinancing with breakeven analysis. SAVE was vacated by the 8th Circuit in March 2026 and is no longer modeled as an active option.

Can I model PSLF with this calculator?

Yes — PSLF modeling is a core feature. Toggle PSLF on, enter your residency length and target employer type, and the calculator shows your full 120-payment trajectory with the projected forgiveness amount, tax-free. It compares PSLF against aggressive payoff and refinancing so you can see which strategy saves the most for your specific specialty.

Does this work for DO students and Caribbean medical school graduates?

Yes. MedDebt is not limited to MD students or LCME-accredited schools. DO students, Caribbean graduates (SGU, AUA, Ross, etc.), and international medical graduates can use all features including PSLF modeling, specialty presets, and the AI Co-Pilot.

How is this different from the AAMC MLOC calculator?

The AAMC MLOC requires an AAMC account, is limited to LCME-accredited MD students, and does not compare multiple repayment strategies side by side. MedDebt is free, requires no login, serves all medical students including DO and Caribbean, and models PSLF vs IBR vs aggressive payoff vs refinancing simultaneously with 21 specialty salary presets.

Is this calculator updated for 2026 loan rule changes?

Yes. The calculator reflects the One Big Beautiful Bill Act changes effective July 1, 2026: Grad PLUS loans eliminated for new borrowers, RAP plan added as the new IDR option for loans disbursed after July 1, 2026, and PAYE/ICR phased out for new enrollees. SAVE is marked as vacated.

Can I save my results?

Yes. Create a free account (Clerk-based, no payment required) to save up to 3 scenarios and access them across devices. Pro subscribers get unlimited saved scenarios, PDF export with professional letterhead, and PSLF payment tracking with reminders.
